Job Summary:
Our client is seeking a skilled and experienced Estimator to join their team in Vancouver. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heavy civil and infrastructure projects, with expertise in estimating and cost control. This role involves coordinating the total estimating effort for assigned bids/projects and ensuring accurate and competitive proposals. Project value up to $20m.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Estimating Coordination:
    • Coordinate the total estimating effort for assigned bids/projects.
    • Review proposal specifications, drawings, and attend pre-bid meetings to determine the scope of work and required contents of estimates.
    • Review project schedules to ensure accurate estimation timelines.
    • Organize the estimating team to prepare bids, select vendors/subcontractors, and determine the cost-effectiveness of projects.
  2. Cost Analysis and Risk Management:
    • Perform or assist in risk and contract management responsibilities.
    • Perform daily forecasts of crew costs and production rates, reporting to the Superintendent as required.
    • Review and incorporate historical data from purchase orders, subcontracts, and productivity analysis reports into unit and man-hour figures.
  3. Detailed Estimations:
    • Prepare discipline-specific estimates by calculating complete takeoffs of the scope of work.
    • Consult with clients, vendors, and other stakeholders to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve any issues.
    • Monitor client addenda and advise the estimating team on changes during the estimate period.
  4. Bid Preparation:
    • Prepare or assist in the preparation of bids, selecting vendors and/or subcontractors.
    • Review design options and recommend the best solutions based on cost, engineering quality, or material availability.
    • Collaborate with company employees, owners, and subcontractors to secure commitment/consensus regarding proposed bids.
  5. Project Knowledge and Compliance:
    • Acquire knowledge of the project and appropriate regulations required for construction.
    • Review the list of work to be performed by subcontractors.
    • Review the final estimate for accuracy and completeness.
  6. Project Handover and Monitoring:
    • Partner with other estimators to turn projects over to the production team.
    • Follow awarded contracts, including estimating extra work items, change orders, and credits.
    • Advise on major changes in the scope of work and monitor actual costs versus estimated costs.
    • Conduct project debriefings with estimating, engineering, and production teams to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the project.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain files of working documents as backup for estimate figures, including current and accurate information on prices from suppliers and subcontractors.
    • Perform additional assignments as directed by management.
Ideal Candidate Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution with 5 years of estimating and cost control experience, or
  • 10 years of related experience and/or training in the construction industry.
  • Strong background in construction, design, finance, and management.
  • Advanced knowledge of HCSS Heavy Bid Estimating Software.
