As they continue to expand, they are seeking an experienced and dynamic Controller to lead their finance function and work closely with ownership to support strategic growth.
 
Position Overview:
The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the entire accounting and finance function of the company. This role requires someone with extensive experience in civil construction and excavations, who can be the primary financial leader within the organization.

 
The Controller will collaborate closely with the owners, providing financial insights, managing budgets, and ensuring the company’s financial health. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of running a finance department in a similar industry and be comfortable in a hands-on, leadership role.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage all aspects of the accounting function, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Work closely with company ownership to provide financial analysis, business recommendations, and strategic insights.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Manage and monitor the company's financial performance, including revenue, expenses, and profit margins.
  • Oversee project accounting and job cost tracking, ensuring alignment with project budgets and forecasts.
  • Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Liaise with external auditors, banks, and other financial partners as needed.
  • Support the owners with financial planning and analysis to guide key business decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and financial reporting standards.
  • Manage payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger functions.
  • Continuously seek improvements in processes and financial systems to enhance efficiency.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA designation preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in finance and accounting, with at least 3 years in a senior leadership role (Controller or higher).
  • Experience in the civil construction or excavations industry is essential.
  • Proven track record of managing the full finance function in a mid-size company.
  • Strong understanding of project-based accounting, job costing, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to work closely with company owners and provide clear financial guidance.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a hands-on approach to problem-solving.
  • Proficient in accounting software and MS Office, particularly Excel.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian tax regulations and accounting standards.
