Looks like Amazon has secured itself a place in Seattle’s skyline. Seattle’s second-tallest skyscraper, which is currently under construction on the Rainier Square block downtown, will have 722,000 square feet of office space—and it’s all being leased to Amazon.
The company reportedly first started eying the property back in April, Puget Sound Business Journalreported—way before announcing their hunt for another city to host a second headquarters.
Seattle Times reports that it’s one of the biggest leases in Seattle history. The space will have room for 3,500 employees.
The building, which recently started construction, features a unique swoop shape which some call similar to a champagne flute, shoe, or ice cream scoop. It’s a nod to the Minoru Yamasaki-designed Rainier Tower next door, which was built in 1977 and features a tapered base.
University of Washington, who owns the tract Rainier Tower is on, selected Wright Runstad to redevelop the entire block, save the iconic original tower.
The new, 58-story tower will also include retail below and 200 residences on the 41st through 58th floors.
The building is currently under construction, and could open as soon as 2020.
