Oweninny Power has today confirmed that it is about to commence site works on the second phase of its wind farm at Bellacorick in north Mayo.
The development is a joint venture between ESB and Bord na Mona.
A company spokesperson told the Western People that the total level of investment in phase two (83MW) is still being finalised but should be similar to that of phase one which was over €100m, making the development one of the largest constructions projects in the region.
“This exciting phase of the project builds on the successful completion of the 89MW first phase, as well as on a decades-long history of indigenous electricity generation in this part of Mayo,” the spokesperson said,
Approximately 100 jobs will be sustained during the construction of phase two of the Oweninny wind farm and the developers say many of these roles will be filled from the north Mayo area.
As with phase one, the second stage of the wind farm project will deliver a significant financial boost of approximately €25m to the north Mayo economy through the contracting of local suppliers and equipment providers, employment and accommodation.
The spokesperson added that guidance in relation to the establishment of a community fund associated with phase two of the wind farm will issue in due course.
In 2020, over €200,000 was delivered to local good causes and projects as part of community funding associated with Oweninny.
