Despite the fact that December 2019 was a month of holidays and celebrations across the world, for the Middle East’s construction industry it was business as usual.
From UAE’s Gulf Contractors to AMEA Power, Mott MacDonald to GE, as well as Mabanee and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) witnessed a successful month in December 2019, winning contracts worth millions and billions of dollars.
Construction activities continued to keep their pace for various projects, including UAE’s Etihad Rail, Juabil Island, Bahrain’s The Avenues – Bahrain Phase 2, as well as Saudi Arabia’s Shuqaiq 3 substation.

1. L&T awards Orpic’s Sohar Refinery revamp contract to Mammoet
Dutch provider of installation, decommissioning, and transportation services Mammoet has been picked by Indian construction heavyweight Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to support heavy lifting activities as part of Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company’s (Orpic) Sohar Refinery revamp project.
In a statement, the Utrecht-headquartered firm revealed that scope of work for the project covers removal of the existing residue fluid catalytic cracker (RFCC) reactor, and installation of a new reactor, external riser, and associated components.

2. Gulf Contractors Company wins $21.8m infra works at Jubail Island
Abu Dhabi-based general contracting firm Gulf Contractors Company (GCC) has secured a $21.8m (AED80m) infrastructure works contract for the $1.4bn (AED5bn) Jubail Island, which is being developed by Jubail Island Investment Company (JIIC).
Scope of work for GCC covers the construction of a 3km-long public loop road circling around Souk Al Jubail to provide road connectivity and access to the neighbouring villages, plus the construction of 5km of internal roads in Marfaa Al Jubail.
3. AquaChemie picks Mott MacDonald for $40.8m Dubai chemical facility
AquaChemie Middle East has picked UK-based engineering, management, and development consultancy Mott MacDonald for a design, engineering, and project management contract for its $40.8m (AED150m) chemical terminal facility at Jebel Ali Port — operated by DP World — in Dubai.
Set to be commissioned by mid-2021, the facility will facilitate petrochemical trade across the GCC region and benefit the global petrochemicals market that is valued at $539.3bn (AED146.5tn) in general and the UAE in particular.
4. AMEA Power inks Egypt’s 500MW wind, 200MW solar project deals
Dubai-based AMEA Power, a subsidiary of Al Nowais Investments (ANI) has inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) with The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to build a 200MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project and a 500MW wind power project in Egypt.
As part of the agreement, Abyodos Solar Power Company (ASPC) that is fully-owned by AMEA Power, will build-own-operate the 200MW solar project in the Kom Ombo region of Aswan under a 25-year take-or-pay agreement.
Meanwhile, Amunet Wind Power Company (AWPC), a part of AMEA Power, will build-own-operate the 500MW wind power project in the Ras Ghareb area under a 20-year take-or-pay agreement.
5. CRCC, NPC win $1.3bn Etihad Rail Package D civil works contract
A joint venture of China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and National Projects Construction (NPC) have won a $1.3bn (AED4.6bn) contract for civil works and construction of 145km-Package D of Stage 2 of the 1,200km UAE’s national railway, Etihad Rail, to link Fujairah and Khorfakkan ports to the network at Dubai-Sharjah border.

6. US’ Hill Int’l wins consultancy contract from Abu Dhabi’s Aldar
New York Stock Exchange-listed (NYSE) American construction consulting firm, Hill International has secured a consultancy contract from Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange-listed (ADX) real estate developer Aldar Properties to provide advisory and supervisory services for its Al Reeman Phase 1 and 2 developments in the UAE capital.
In a statement the consulting giant said that the contract will help Aldar achieve “established project parameters in terms of time, cost, and quality”.
7. US’ GE wins contract for Shuqaiq 3 substation from ACCIONA
New York Stock Exchange-listed (NYSE) GE’s grid solutions business, which is a part of its subsidiary GE Renewable Energy has bagged a contract from Spanish firm ACCIONA to provide a 380/132 kV GIS substation that will power the Shuqaiq 3 desalination plant.
As part of the contract GE will provide designing, manufacturing, construction, and commissioning services in addition to supplying power transformers, grid automation and telecommunication systems that will complete the electricity connection in the Red Sea coastal city of Shuqaiq in the kingdom.
8. Azizi awards $13.6m contract to Prestige for Berton in Al Furjan
Dubai-based real estate developer Azizi Developments has awarded a $13.6m (AED50m) contract to UAE-based Prestige Constructions — which is also working on eight buildings in the 29.7km2 Victoria project in MBR City — for the construction of Berton in Al Furjan.
The seven-storied Berton features 190 studio, 41 one-bedroom, and 14 two-bedroom apartments. Homes within Berton have high-end parquet flooring, state-of-the-art décor, and generous space.
9. Kuwait-listed Mabanee to work on The Avenues – Bahrain Phase 2
Boursa Kuwait-listed real estate developer Mabanee has revealed that The Avenues Company, fully-owned by Al Sorouh Management Company — 35% of which is owned by Mabanee — and Bahrain’s ministry of works, municipalities, and urban planning have signed an agreement to work on The Avenues – Bahrain Phase 2, construction work on which will commence in Q1 2020.
10. CSCEC, Wengfu to build, operate Egypt’s phosphoric acid plant
State-run China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) alongside Wengfu Group has inked a construction and operation contract with Egypt’s Phosphate Misr Company for a phosphoric acid plant in the North African nation, with a total investment of $848m.
Located at Abu Tartour of New Valley Governorate in the southwest of Egypt, the plant will produce commercial-grade phosphoric acid products.
Scope of work under the contract covers engineering, construction, and procurement (EPC) of temporary facilities on-site, process, storage, and transport facilities — both on-and off-site —, as well as utilities.
